A large proportion of "energy" is consumed in simply getting up to speed. Whether it is accelerating to 65 mph on the freeway or getting to the door of the gym, the rest is the easy part.
To be more productive, break down your desired tasks into "micro-steps." For example, do you need to sort through a large file cabinet in your home office that you have been avoiding? Why not make your first day's work to simply removing all of the files from the cabinet. This will have a tremendous psychological effect on your inertia--you've begun! The next day you could make it your goal to simply sort through six inches of files--that's it. If you are like most people, sorting through six inches will take five minutes or less and because you are already "in the neighborhood," you will likely work considerably longer. Also, most people hate to see a pile on the floor so this will motivate you too. The trick is the celebrate even if you choose only to work on your project for five minutes. That was your goal and you have met it. You don't need to take several hours in one day to finish a task. Some big projects can be accomplished in two or three weeks permitting you to stay focused on more important things.
